Just before Christmas, Natalie from So Much to Tell You contacted me to let me know I was the lucky winner of their Frankie Diary giveaway!

I've never won anything before so I was rather thrilled to find such a lovely parcel waiting for me when I got home from overseas.

As an organised (obsessive?) Virgo, there's nothing I love more than a well-considered diary. I just love how this one features a month at a page but then also has week by week so you can look at things in more detail. It even includes fun sections at the back like budgets and calling cards! Definitely a top replacement for last year's super fun rainbow Kikki K. diary.

As I go about my daily life (teaching, reading, playing music, running, eating with friends, riding my bike) I often come across little snippets that I'd like to include on the blog. This usually results in scraps of paper all over the house with a few words of reference hastily scribbled on them. I've tried to become more organised (Virgo!) by using a dedicated note on my iPhone, but nothing beats your own handwriting, rushed off in a spur of inspiration.

Here then is an old image, but something I must have discovered and dug a while ago.

5 reasons I know I'm on the other side of 25.

I'm starting to realise just how far I've gotten from those crazy days in my early twenties where Tuesdays were the new Fridays and a night out could turn into a 24-hour excursion.

Although I have a lot of fun memories (and a few gaps....) I just don't have the stamina anymore. I realised that last night watching Cold Chisel (yes!) where I managed to fall asleep mid-set multiple times (to be fair, it was past 9.30).

So! Here are five reasons I know I'm on the other side of 25.

1. I keep a pair of driving gloves in my car and use them whenever I've been parked in the sun and the steering wheel is too hot. Related: economical use of the gearbox and changing into fifth whenever I can.

2. My Christmas wishlist could easily be confused for that of someone a few generations older. On the list?

A big mixing bowl
Bedsheets
Suncream
A nice calendar

Rock n' Roll lifestyle, I know.

3. I have a collection of indoor and outdoor potplants that I tend to on a daily basis.

4. My weekend activities have been rather revealing. Last Saturday night I had an early evening music gig then fell asleep after driving home through the countryside. This Saturday night we are hosting another couple for dinner. Again, non-stop Rock n' Roll.

5. Following on from #4, my hobbies at the moment include playing in a community band, reading six or more books per month, and steadily working my way through a new cookbook.

Despite getting on in years (ha!) I am happy with where I'm at right now.

We made it! Follow weeks one, two and three or be thankful that you'll finally see Sequin Cat in pants (horror!)

To be honest, this challenge was supremely do-able for somebody with as full a wardrobe as mine. I'm trying to cut down on my possessions, but I just really, really love dressing up.

Five Things

Goodness gracious! I haven't done one of these for a while.

1. I went to Harvest Festival over the weekend. As well as lots of good music (Mercury Rev, The National, Bright Eyes, Flaming Lips, Portishead... lucky me!), it reminded me of the need to dress theatrically during the day-to-day. Funny shapes, patterns, clashing colours, unexpected accessories.... I hope I can keep channelling that fun, festival energy!

2. Perhaps as a way of dealing with the craziness that is November, I've been reading lots. The focus lately has been France (quelle surprise!) I highly recommend The Secret Life of France by Lucy Wadham. I'm not sure how I feel about Paris Metro Tales, despite being half-way through. Finally, I finally finished (re-reading) Candide by Voltaire. I'm not sure what exactly my aversion to it was. I guess after a hard day's work I was less than thrilled by the idée of bedtime reading in French.

3. Finally adopting Instagram on my phone. It's slow, but nice to take snapshots of extraordinary things in everyday life.

4. I went to the dentist last week (after missing my initial appointment-oops!) and ever since, my way of brushing has been completely revolutionised. Now there's a lot more foaming at the mouth like a rabid dog but those pearlies are sure looking shiny.

5. I'm not the biggest Woody Allen fan (I lie, I really can't stand him) but this new film was enough to entertain and made me whistful for Paris. Can you see the French theme that's been going on lately?!

I've been thinking about what my summer goals are lately (what, you don't do this too?!) and have discovered most of them are food-related!

I would like to:

Make bread from scratch, sans bread machine

Make my own cheese!

Sing!

Compile my happiness handbook, for real

Obviously it's still a work in progress, but... cheese! bread! Wouldn't that be brilliant?

I'm dreaming about France again but have booked a holiday slightly closer to home. Right after Christmas we're spending three weeks exploring Vietnam!

It's been a dress-frenzy for the month of Frocktober! We are now back to normal programming and I've been wearing skirts during this awkward spring mood swing season. I bought some red cropped pants the other day and am still not sure.

The occasional smokey eye and the usual bright coral lipstick. I've been known to bust out some bright green eyeshadow on the odd occasion too!

I'm trying to wear more than just my normal red heart ring. Unfortunately, a plastic skeleton brooch isn't the most appropriate for school. I bought a glue gun the other day in the hope of making a floral crown à la Rookie.

Reflecting at the end of a long day is making me consider how much good I have in my life. I like it. Gratitude journal. I'm also enjoying RunKeeper as it keeps track of my running stats.

I should make more of an effort to listen to new material. On the way to school it's often Band of Horses or the National (who I get to see twice this month!)

I feel like I've just discovered lots of great new ones (but am lacking the time to appreciate them!) ShimmerLikeGold is still a fave, as is WhatKatieWore. A Beautiful Mess can be hit or miss and sometimes too DIY for my tastes but worth a peep. Do you have any I'm severely missing out on? Perhaps your own?

I'm hoping this summer will be one of mojitos. At the moment we're drinking a lot of beer and peach iced tea.

I'm always keen for new places to try. The last few occasions have been a little disappointing (I'm looking at you, Rob Roy Hotel and Parade Thai). We love going to Wah Hing on Gouger.

Back in September, I set myself the challenge of wearing a dress every day for the month of October. Lots of bloggers did this to raise money and awareness for ovarian cancer; I was behind the times a bit and instead just did it for myself as a clothing challenge.

Having come out the other end of it (I wore a skirt today!) I have to say how much I enjoyed the challenge, and found it relatively easy getting dressed - no thoughts about matching colours/patterns/shapes, just a dress and I was... dressed.

Some thoughts on France

Lately I've been thinking about France a lot.

I'm reading this great book at the moment written from the perspective of an English woman who not only married a Frenchie but raised their children there for a few decades before divorcing. Her take on French culture and society is sophisticated and refreshing and I often find myself shaking my head in agreement!

I've also discovered a new blog about an American woman recovering from heartbreak in Paris (sounds more cliché than it is!) and I'm really enjoying her stories of discovering Paris from an outsider's point of view. It reminds me a lot of my own experiences living there and the difficulties (and joys!) I faced.

I'm hoping it'll be less than a year before I'm back there again. I need to top-up my language, and the manfriend is working on his in preparation. I keep talking to myself in French (most often when I'm upset?) and finding scribbled notes, hurried thoughts written in a foreign tongue that sometimes makes more sense to me than my own.

I miss the cheeses. Australian wine is comparable to French, but the cheeses are what I miss. Oh, and the excellent bread. And the tartes à la fraise. There's a lot, I guess.

Just yesterday I got an email from DisneylandParis, confirming that my CV was about to be removed from their servers. Even though there's no reason to it, I kind of wish they'd keep a record of it, just in case, one day...
I had such a great time working there. The most magical Paris experience.

Dislike: Tearing said stockings in arriving at school by failing to leap over a puddle in a pencil skirt and twisting my ankle, going to the health care centre before class.

Oh folks, I've done it to you again!

It's not that I don't want to blog.... I desperately want luxurious hours spent on google reader, palming through my blogroll. I want to share with you all the colour and fun I've been having lately. But, yknow, I've been busy. Turns out being a citizen of the world takes time, and between my community (musical!) service, cooking and seeing all my friends that I've neglected during term time, the result is a neglected blog.

To add to the list of lame excuses - my computer is struggling to pick up wifi so I find myself only on the internet when I am physically attached to it via a cable. Not so glamorous.

I made Szechuan eggplant last week! I was rather pleased. A spring vegetable quiche too - asparagus is so delicious at the moment. Perhaps I'll buy a muffin tray and try some choc banana treats.

Otherwise?

We now live near the Central Markets. This means we can pick up groceries in a hurry and Chinatown is only a short dinner stroll away. However a few pickles have popped up lately: is it totally inappropriate for manfriend to wear a tae kwon do tshirt to an Asian restaurant (oops!)? Should I change out of my kimono to go to dinner?

During my school holidays I've been reading New Scientist magazine over breakfast, devouring John Wyndham's Trouble with Lichen and seeing if Paul Hewitt can give me any insights as to how I can present the next topic to my physics classes.

I haven't been taking photos on the weekends lately as we've been busy busy busy moving house. I did manage to find some clothes amongst the many boxes a few weekends back to enjoy "The Arrival", an orchestration of Shaun Tan's book at local theatre Her Majesty's.

Thoroughly enjoyed the performance (arranged by amazing percussionist Ben Walsh) and followed it up with tasty Chinese. Yes!

I did have to teach on my birthday but I thought seeing as it was a special occasion I could get away with a party dress. I also signed a lease on our new place! Most exciting day.

Got changed into something blue and slinky for Indian that evening.

After enduring a week of doom at school (with no sign of things calming down!) and moving house over the weekend, I have had approximately zero time to fritter away on the internet. And I miss it!

Broadband is set to be hooked up at the end of next week but in the mean-time I'll have to make do with brief browsing during my lunch breaks.
